A member asked:

Do antibiotics affect birth control, specifically iuds? i'm on cipro (ciprofloxacin) and have a mirena iud.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not to worry: All IUDs prevent pregnancy, and antibiotics don't interfere with them. Mirena (levonorgestrel) combines the usual action of an IUD with the hormonal effects of the progesterone-type drug included with it. A few antibiotics can affect the hormone's effectiveness, but most won't, including ciprofloxacin.
