Why are hemoglobin levels higher in newborns?

To carry more oxygen: Fetal hemoglobin hangs on to oxygen tighter that adult hemoglobin. Therefore more red blood cells are needed to cary the amount of oxygen that can be delivered to the tissues. The blood in utero is very saturated at a lower oxygen tension. The fetal hemoglobin is needed in utero and is slowly replaced by adult hemoglobin after birth.
