A member asked:

Which type of genes, if abnormally activated so that the protein is always present and active, result in cancer?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Oncofetal genes: The genes for oncofetal proteins are normally demethylated in the fetus to produce proteins to allow organs to function. At birth the genes are re:methylated. In colon cancer the most common gene activated is derived from MUC5ac. The protein is a post transcriptional modification of the MUC5ac protein which is immunogenic but present in too low a concentration to be seen by the immune system.
