A member asked:

When you use nasal spray for post-nasal drip, is it supposed to make you cough up mucus?

Irritant: Depends on the spray. Nasal steroid? Nasal Saline? Oxymetazoline? Any spray can potentially have an irritant effect that can lead to cough before the medication takes effect. Liquid sprays may also dislodge some mucous that was already there.

Usually not but: If your sinus openings have been obstructed, the fluid collected may drain after they open up ->draining with the nasal spray. If you aim the spray straight ahead instead of towards the lateral wall , some may get into your throat -> coughing.
