It depends: Mastectomy or surgical removal of the breast is one of the options of treatment of breast cancer. However, a good number of breast cancers can be treated with consideration of breast conservation. In these instances a portion of the breast involved by cancer is removed and additional supplementary treatments such as radiation is usually utilized.
