Pediatric cardiology: Thanks to new minimally invasive techniques, pediatric cardiologists can treat many conditions that previously needed open heart surgery. Closure of congenital heart defects, stent placement, and biopsy of the lining of the heart can be done by a pediatric cardiologist. Complex heart defects are still the purview of the cardiac surgeon.
