Surgical abortion: Pregancies of less than 12 weeks when termination is desired, are evacuated by suction by application of negative pressure to a catheter inserted into the womb. The "products of conception" are thus removed, under local anesthesia and an amnesia causing medication, and this is done as an outpatient procedure.
