Furosemide (Lasix): It is a loop diuretic ("water pill") that blocks sodium reabsorption in a portion of kidney tubules ("loop of Henle"--hence the name "loop" diuretic) and is often prescribed to relieve edema (swelling) in patients with chronic kidney disease or hypertension.
