Dry eye syndrome: commonly can be a culprit for occasional sharp pains felt on the eye. When the corneal epithelium (top layer of the cornea) becomes desiccated from excessive drying, the corneal nerves can become sensitized giving one the sensation you describe. Of course other vision threatening ocular diseases can cause this problem and you should be evaluated by your ophthalmologist for definitive diagnosis.
