Many things: poor intake of food, inadequate absorption, increased requirements as during inflammation and infections. Absorption conditions that can lead to malnutrition for example, include, celiac, crohn's and colitis. Increased losses may be seen in maldigestion such as pancreas problems- diabetes,- where you dont metabolize sugar and carbohydrates in your body without the help of insulin.
