Can some mental or memory problems be caused by malnutrition?

Yes: Yes but only in rare and severe cases. Vitamin deficiencies especially B12 and Folic Acid are said to be involved i'm memory processing, however they are needed as trace elements and only occur in malabsorption syndromes, after certain bowel surgeries etc.
