It depends...: Desoxyn is not used that much anymore, in part because it is methamphetamine, which is a heavy-duty street drug. I only very rarely prescribe it, and advise against it for a teen or child. But every patient is different, and different drs have different experiences and preferences. Still, we have many other better choices for our patients now, only 1 of which is adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine).

Individual : Most meds approved for add are efficacious, but not all are effective. The amer acad peds recommends starting with amphetamine or methylphenidate first, then using other medications if the first don't work (effect) or has side effects. Desoxyn is methamphetamine, only lasts a short time, & can be easily diverted for illicit use. Lisdexamfetamine is not easily diverted & is therefore preferable.
