Yes: Sometimes the anus is not open and a surgeon after birth can rectify this situation. Depending upon the level of the obstruction-the surgery may be simple or complex. The infant will have to undergo some diagnostic radiology. Infant should be born in a hospital that has a Pediatric Surgeon.

Yes: During fetal development the internal structure of the large intestine grows toward the point where the anus should be & the external skin meets it.If the two both attach & make the opening a normal anus is formed. If the inside doesn't make it all the way down, or the opening doesn't form it is imperforate. There are variations in degree and the amount of work needed to fix it.
