They often can: Ectopic beats are heart beats that originate from a location in the heart other than the normal sinus node in the atrium(the normal pacemaker). If they originate in the atrium they are called premature atrial contractions(PACs). If they originate from the ventricle they are called(PVCs). Beta blockers can reduce or prevent PACs and can reduce the symptoms from frequent PVCs.
