Usually die : After a viral infection most of the time Leydig cells die or atrophy and become nonfunctional in that testicle. There always the rare occasions when they survive there are always exceptions with bacterial infections usually delayed excels do survive functional

Depends: Since the leydig cells reside in the interstial cells of the seminiferous tubules, the lack of function would depend on how serious the infection was that atrophied the testes. A good measure of this would be the testosterone levels associated with the atrophy, that would give some idea, as well as sperm count, on fertility And presence of viable leydig cells
