Poss muscle spasm: The neck pain could be a muscle spasm or strain if you have no fever or related cold symptoms. There are muscles that go from your ear along the side your neck. It could also be TMJ. This a joint on the side of your neck/face by your ear that can cause pain along the side to your ear when it hurts.

Neck pain: This could be muscle strain or inflammation. It could also be due to a viral infection involving throat, neck lymph nodes or ear. At present your symptoms are nondiagnostic. Try warm applications and take Tylenol (acetaminophen). If symptoms progress to a full blown viral infection, they should run their course in several days. A severe, persistent sore throat calls for a cuture to be done.

Merits evaluation: If the pain persists, see a doctor for a careful exam and imaging to clarify the cause of the pain.
