Is there anything that might resemble a cold sore on or around the lips?

Yes, several things: This depends partly on "resemble". Pimples, small sebaceous cysts, bacterial or fungal infections, angular cheilitis and others all could be confused with herpes. But if you're having repeated clusters of 2+ lesions that over 2-5 days go from bumps to blisters then pimples then open sores or scabs, it's herpes. Canker sores (inside the lips, in the mouth) aren't cold sores and not herpes.
