Intimatecontact only: Unclear wording. You can't get it if your partner is not infected. You have to catch the herpes virus from a person already carrying it. Catching it requires intimate contact, like kissing (sexual kissing, not just a peck), intercourse, or oral sex -- depending on which virus and where on the body the other person is infected. It is not transmitted by non-intimate contact, like shaking hands.
