How do they clean pools before opening them for the year?

Many Steps: They will remove the pool cover. Install drain plugs into pump, chlorinator & filter. Turn on power to pump. Start system. Skim the top of the pool. Vacuum the interior of the pool & then brush the pool. Check / balance chemicals. It is a lot of work !.
