Not recommended: Elevated platelet counts increase the risk of thrombotic events like stroke, deep venous thrombosis, or hepatic vein thrombosis. The incidence is up to 17%. Hormonal contraceptives containing estrogen also increase risk of thrombotic events. Progestin only contraceptives do not appear to increase risk in women at greater risk of thrombosis.
