If you can put body: weight (weightbearing) on it, you may have a severe strain. If it's swollen, and you can't weight bear, consider a high grade sprain, and or possible dislocation or otherwise. It will have to be imaged to be definitive, by xray or MRI. Your doctor will know what to do. In the meantime, elevate, ice and immobilize until you get to the doctor's office. Take tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain.

Ankle injury: We cant see or examine your ankle. Ice it, immoblize it, keep weight off it and go to ER now to rule out ligament tear or closed bone fracture.
