Why self-medicating?: The injury incurred by heavy drinking tends to be permanent. Cessation of the habit will at least prevent further damage. The next thing you need to ask yourself, why the need to self medicate? Why do you need an "alternative". There are much better and more effective options if you are willing to put for the effort. Find a mental health professional that you can work with and stay healthy.

Should: You are young and if you stop drinking hopefully your body and particularly your liver will recover. THC is not a good substitute and will bring on other problems. You sound like you may have drug dependency symptoms and should be seen in drug addiction counseling. All the best.

What is scarred?: Self-medicating with chronic alcoholism is not a good choice healing scars. Nor is using marijuana. You might benefit greatly from seeing your PCP, who can refer you to a psychologist who can help you manage stress better, and arrive at making better life and health choices. So that you can live a long, healthy without scarring.

It's my bias: based on clinical experience and research that a mind-body approach would me the most helpful alternative. Perhaps you are masking an anxiety disorder. Exercise, meditation, good food all help. Your liver will thank you. Don't know about the scarring. Consult w/a natural doctor would be best. peace and good health.

Recover: Firstly, marijuana is not an alternative! It is a drug, not a substitute for alcohol. Secondly, your liver will recover if you abstain from alcohol now and in future. Treat your body nicely and it will treat you well in the long run.

Several points.: drinking heavily and stopping produces a risk of serious withdrawal that would occur in the first week after quitting if it were to occur. Assuming someone were past that frame, then there is some (small) continuing scarring after stopping drinking as the liver heals by itself Generally not serious if the person doesn't already show signs of LIVER FAILURE. Marijuana has it's own separate risks.

It's worth while!: Whether or not you have near total recovery (liver?), at your age - it is brilliant to stop heavy drinking. Livers do tend to heal if they are not too badly damaged and you've got lots of time ahead of you. Marijuana is much less damaging unless you can't find a way to get it legally. Best wishes. Be careful. Dry out!
