Menstrual cramps: Menstrual cramps are caused by the prostaglandins which are released by the breakdown of the uterine lining. NSAIDs are also known as anti-prostaglandins and thus naproxen and ibuprofen can help. The other way of helping is the use of birth control pills and progestin containing contraceptives which decrease the amount of uterine lining and thus decrease the amount of prostaglandin.

Menstrual cramps: Many women do get significant cramping during their menses. Anti inflammatories such as naproxen (alleve) and ibuprofen (motrin, advil) can help with the symptoms. If you have a very regular period, starting the anti inflammatory 24 hours prior to starting the flow is very helpful in blocking the painful cramps completely.
