What is vascularization of tumors?

5 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Degree of vascularit: Most tumor grow by anerobic metabolism, Warburg Citric Acid Cycle. They do not need oxygen to survive and can best be controlled by use of Hyperbaric Oxygenation. Blood supply serves to allow the tumor cells to metastasize. Drugs that inhibit blood supply like Avastin (bevacizumab) actually work by opening microcirculation to let drugs into tumor.more effectively.

Blood vessel growth: Tumors arise when there is abnormal proliferation of cells within tissue. As tumors grow they stimulate angiogenesis or new blood vessel growth into them to sustain their growth since they need this for further growth. With neo-vascularization, existing blood vessels are recruited and remodeled & new blood vessel grow into the tumor to provide blood supply for the tumor tissue survival.
