Embryo: This is a transient anatomic structure that occurs during cardiac development. A form of atrial septal defect (10% of ASD) can involve imperfect maturation of the heart with pathologic communication between the right atrium (collector of deoxygenated blood from the body), vena cavae and pulmonary veins usually resulting in L to R shunt (oxygenated blood diverts to R side of heart).
