Good risk: Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is characterized by the presence of "promyelocytes" in the blood and bone marrow. They have a very distinctive appearance. APL arises from very specific gene mutations that puts the disease in a good risk category. This means that the most patients can be put into remission and cured of the disease, using retinoic acid, arsenic trioxide, and chemotherapy.
