Parotid gland: the parotid gland lies just in front of the ear on both sides of the face. Its removal can be either partial or total. Surgery of any kind is accompanied by the risk of infection, excessive scarring, nerve damage, extended pain and cosmetic consequences. The facial nerve is carefully preserved during total parotidectomy but is at risk of damage. Facial paralysis may result.
