See below: Generally speaking, the first treatment, if the agent is a bacterial one, is to treat with appropriate antibiotics; but if viral, then if encephalitis occurs, supportive care is performed which can involve intensive care sometimes requiring mechanical ventilation. But often severe sequela result with neurological problems that persist if the person survives.
