No: In larger hospitals, they are an intensivist. They are an internal medicine, emergency medicine or anesthesia doctor or surgeon that has gone through extra training for treatment of the critically ill. Often, but by no means always, they are pulmonologists as well. Smaller hospitals have internal medicine doctors or family practice doctors see their patients in the ICU.
