Stripes on nails: White lines can be caused by malnutrition or liver diease. Dark lines running down a nail in black people over age 20 is usually normal (linear melanoychia). Black stripes down one nail could be a subungual hematoma. However a black stripe could also be due to cancer (subungual melanoma). Red or brown streaks could be splinter hemorrhages.
