A member asked:

What causes the kidneys to stimulate renin production? what is renin for?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Renin production: Renin (R) is secreted by the kidney when it perceives a reduction in blood volume to elevate and maintain BP. This could be seen in appropriate instances such as dehydration or blood loss. R converts angiotesinogen to angiotensin (A) 1, which gets converted to A 2 which is a constrictor of blood vessels. This constriction elevates BP. Go to: http://www.nature.com/nrd/journal/v1/n8/fig_tab/nrd873_F1.html
