Warning sign: Prediabetes is a warning sign that you may be at risk for developing diabetes. You have some features that may lead to diabetes but you do not yet fit the definition for diagnosis. Two of the criteria for diabetes are two fasting blood sugars of 126 or higher and a random non-fasting sugar of 200 or higher. Prediabetes is a fasting sugar of 100-125 or random of 140-199. There are others too.

At risk for diabetes: With the diabetes epidemic up to 25% of the population has prediabetes and this is a is a precursor to developing diabetes. These are individuals who may be overweight or have a family history of diabetes. Blood tests which are used to identify prediabetes include a mild elevation in the fasting glucose (100-125) or an elevation in a glucose test called hemoglobin a1c (5.7-6.4%).

Prediabetes.: Prediabetes implies the eventual development of diabetes, which is usually genetically predetermined. So at best, aggressive management of prediabetes can delay the onset of diabetes. That being said, blood sugar measurements can be adequately controlled at times with diet and exercise alone, without medications.
