It takes 2 to argue: so start with active listening. If you disagree with their opinion, then state, "You have strong feelings about that." and then leave it alone or add, "I see it from a different point of view." Avoid "you" statements, such as, "you should..., you're wrong.... you can't...your are a ." ,and use statements of fact: " the plans for today are..." Focus on their positive attributes. Good luck

Tell them your : household rules before they come or as soon as they arrive. Ask them how they'll get their meds refilled while with you. Tell them you love them, but if their mood disorders are not stabilized, you need their doctors to refer & send records to a psychiatrist & psychologist in your town. Discuss what you'll do if their BPD disrupts family function. Get written permission to talk to their doctors.
