At his age it is not: recommended to give over-the-counter cold or cough medications. You can use saline mist or drops to help relieve some of his nasal congestion. It is most likely a viral infection with post nasal drip causing the cough. If he has not had a visit to his pediatrician or if you went at the beginning of the illness, I would have him re-checked there. They can determine the best treatment for him.
