Depressant effect: Hydro codons is a narcotic that suppresses the respiratory system. It can cause respiratory depression, apnea (stoppage of breathing) and refractory arrest.life threatening and fatal cases can occur even with recommended use. The patient should be monitored for respiratory depression especially during the start or after the dose is increased.

Suppression: Opiates in general cause respiratory depression--suppression of the respiratory center in the brain stem, this is dose dependent and is not permanent unless it leads to complete cessation of breathing. Therapeutic medical dosages are very unlikely to cause suppression. Usually it is high doses and overdoses that do that.
