Unexplained Weight L: The two most common causes that I know of are either a cancer or an overactive thyroid gland. Your friend should see a doctor right away for evaluation and treatment if indicated.

It depends : Weight loss is a constitutional symptom can indicate a problem with high metabolism ( diabetes, thyroid, cancer) could be related to poor intake ( depression, difficulties with swallowing, strictures at the stomach or its junctions , ulcers etc) could be related to chronic infections such as TB but really needs more evaluations.
