Examination: Erysipelas is a superficial infection of the skin with marked redness, swelling and pain. The infection is usually caused by streptococcus bacteria. Cellulitis is deeper skin infection and usually caused by staphylococci. Often the sharp line of demarcation between normal and infected tissue and the intensity of redness are the main visible differences.
