Hard to say: Whats causing this as more information about your the nature of headaches is necessary. It should be noted some of the more concerning causes like brain tumors or vascular issues become less likely because usually they will cause major issues if left untreated for 10 years like you mention. It isn't normal to have frequent severe headaches! But it also doesn't mean something very bad is going on

Neurologist: These headaches could be migraine or muscle contraction tension headaches. Less common causes would be eye problems, elevated blood pressure, intracranial growths or aneurysm. Since they sound rather frequent and severe, I recommend a consultation with a neurologist for diagnosis and treatment. He /she will order any appropriate tests.
