Light bleeding: If the light bleeding and then brown discharge occurred about 6-9 days after a "normal" period, if you are on birth control pills, it may be that you did not take the pill at the same time on one or two days which causes this kind of withdrawal bleeding. If not on bcp, it may represent a double ovulation, which can result in slight withdrawal bleeding. If this continues, see your gyn provider.

No way to tell: This does not really seem to be a problem unless it is associated with pain. A culture for infection and perhaps an ultrasound may be able to offer clues, but likely it was just due to an abnormal cycle which can happen a few times per year for most women.
