What are the tests for venous insufficiency?

Ultrasound: Compression augmentation/relaxation with venous ultrasound is the test to do. Ultrasound is used to look at flow in veins inside the leg to see if blood flows backwards down the leg (called reflux) when the leg is squeezed and then the pressure is released. Reflux means that valves (that normally keep gravity from pulling blood down the leg) aren't working. Hence they are called insufficient.

Ultrasound: A duplex ultrasound that looks for the presence of reflux in the superficial and deep system of veins is the most useful test for venous insufficiency.

Ultrasound: Best test is an ultrasound of the affected area to review the superficial venous system for reflux or insufficiency and evaluate the deeper system for DVT or clot formation. Indirect answers can be obtained by oxygenation testing (tcom) or plethysmography.

Venous insufficiency: Venous reflux, also known as venous insufficiency, is best evaluated with a test called a venous reflux ultrasound. This test visualizes the direction of venous blood flow and can detect faulty valves within the veins. Ultrasound is useful since it is a dynamic test that can visualize the movement of blood. This test is typically used to diagnose the cause of varicose veins or leg swelling.

Venous Ultrasound.: Venous insufficiency is a result of malfunctioning(refluxing) valves in either the superficial, perforator or deep venous systems. The gold standard to make the diagnosis is a venous ultrasound to include an evaluation of all vein levels and to also include an evaluation of both valves and possible clots. Other tests include venograms and plethysmographic evaluations which are not used commonly.
