Oral bc spotting: Today's bcp's are very low dose, and require taking them punctually or breakthrough bleeding will occur. If the bleeding continues, stop the pill, wait for five days, and start a new package. Take the pill within the hour (in the evening) when you took yesterdays pill to prevent irregular bleeding as you describe. You should get a serum pregnancy test (HCG) to be sure you are not pregnant.

Prolonged bleeding: This could be due to missed pills, breakthrough ovulation, pregnancy complication, cysts, fibroids, polyps or simply an out of the blue bad cycle. You may wish to confer with your gynecologist if bleeding and cramping persists.
