Maybe: Any new moles that look asymmetrical, have uneven borders, multiple colors, or just look different than other moles should be investigated. As a general rule, any suspicious skin lesion should be seen by a doctor. And followed yearly unless it is a benign lesion.

How do I know when to get a mole checked out?

Any change: If there is any change it is best to get the moe checked as well as a full body exam to determine if any other molecos suspicious. Do not attempt to self diagnose a mole. Abcde- asymmetrical, irregular border, change in color, 6 mm or greater in diameter, elevated or evolving are signs that a mole needs to be checked.

Not normal: A mole should not itch, burn, bleed, or weep fluid. It should never be painful. If it is any if these, please seek the attention if a physician to biopsy or remove the lesion.

I recommend that: my patients have a head to toe dermatologic examination every year. In some cases the evaluating dermatologist might wish to evaluated more often than that.
