Hemoptysis...: Coughing blood, or hemoptysis, is usually caused by bronchitis. However, malignancy must be ruled out so this symptom must always be evaluated by a doctor!

Airway bleeding: Coughing up blood is never a good thing. Some small streaks can come from your upper airway especially if you have upper airway symptoms such as a very painful sore throat or sinuses for instance, but anything more than that deserves a visit to your doc.

A 45-year-old member asked:

Is there anything that can cause a child to cough up blood?

Dr. Danny Proffitt
Family Medicine 43 years experience
Depends: Generally a child will cough up blood that comes from a nose bleed either known or unknown. If there is no bleeding disorder in the child, no trauma, no gastrointestinal bleeding issues, then there is usually little concern. If large amounts of blood are coughed up (clots or more than a teaspoon of bright red blood), then you may have a problem. If in doubt, see your pcp.
