Spaces in the: lung formed by destruction of lung tissue. These areas of lung can no longer function in oxygen exchange. This is most often due to smoking but there are other potential causes. Mild cases can be asymptomatic, severe cases debilitating.

Emphysema: is a disease of the lung which is either caused by smoking or a genetic abnormality. The normal lung is made of microscopic holes which hold oxygen the way a sponge holds water. Emphysema causes these holes to get larger because of destruction of the tissue. Blebs and bulla are the medical term for these areas of lung that look like Swiss cheese holes or small balloons. If you smoke, PLEASE STOP.
