Yes: Yes, there is surgery that can be done called carpal tunnel release surgery. However, it is usually reserved until after more conservative measures have failed. If you are interested in surgery, you would need to see an orthopedic surgeon to discuss the details.

Yes: Surgery can be immensely helpful in treating carpal tunnel syndrome, especially if more conservative measures have failed. Typically, surgery is performed through a small open incision or by means of an endoscopic approach (small camera is inserted). Surgery often works quite well!

Yes: A carpal tunnel release is a very effective procedure for patients that have failed conservative care.

Yes, but...: Many times carpal release does not give long term relief of symptoms, and causes more physical problems. While doctors will claim anywhere from 90 to 95 percent success, they have a definition which is not supported by long term studies. At least 50% are not successful in the long term relief. Surgery should be the last resort.

Objectification: Surgery by an experienced hand surgeon can be dramatically successful, but, as mentioned, should not be a first choice. A decision can be objectified by an EMG/ NERVE CONDUCTION STUDY, which can determine whether nerve damage is accelerating in spite of conservative measures.

Yes. Surgery can include the traditional open procedure and newer endoscopic options that can reduce pain and recovery. both procedures release the transverse carpal ligament which increases the space within the carpal tunnel and allows more room for the nerve.
