Throat culture: is the most specific means to determining the exact cause of a sore throat. Rapid tests such as throat swabs will detect Strep infections with 80% accuracy, but will provide no information about a specific viral cause. Blood tests may be helpful in determining if antibiotics are warranted. Be wary of those who diagnose a throat infection by sight alone.
