Tubes are safe: Overall risks are minimal. Most common is drainage from the tubes which is usually treatable with antibiotic ear drops but rarely they need to be removed to stop it. There are very small risks of the tubes lasting less than 6 months or longer than 2 years. There could be a persistent hole in the eardrum (~1% of the time). Up to 1/5 people may need a 2nd set of tubes.
