For 3 days now i have had bad lower back pain & my legs go numb from knees down. when the numbness subsides i have pain in my legs. what could it be?

Many things: It is hard to say without seeing you in person - Did you injure your back? A disk herniation or a condition such as "sciatica" could explain your symptoms - alternatively problems such as diabetes and thyroid disease could present similarly.
