Yes: Usually the infection is mumps and in this case, it's edema and ultimately venous infarction. The leydig cells stick around or at least grow back; I've seen them at autopsy. That's why guys who lose both to torsion or mumps are still as potent and otherwise masculinized as before. Syphilitic gummas will destroy parenchyma itself.
