Does it hurt to get braces put on? How long does it take?

Depends: Each person is different and your orthodontist can give you the best estimate. However, by complying with his/her treatments (wearing the elastic bands when you're told too!) you can do your part to make sure your time with braces is as short as possible.

Ice cream and Braces: Yes. Enjoy. But understand anytime you eat be prepared to brush...Yes brush 7 times a day .If you like 3 meals and 4 snacks them brush again. But eat what you like ...Just brush again. I did and i wore braces at 60y/o for 14 months. My best dr. D.

Retainers: Once the bite is correct and all of your teeth are straight the dentist will remove all of the brackets and adhesive that held your brackets. After you are cleaned up he will take impressions for retainers that you will wear all the time for 6 months then nightly for many years. Some offices place permanent wires behind your upper and lower 6 front teeth however makes it difficult to floss and kee.

You can't convince your dentist to start ortho care if he does not deems it appropriate for your mouth. Have this dentist explain his/her reasoning.

Adult orthodontics: The first question i would ask is, "are your teeth crooked?' if they are then you are not too old to have them straightened, assuming your teeth, gums and the supporting bone are all healthy. The oldest ortho patient I have heard of was 72 and the results, according to the orthodontist , were good and the patient was pleased. Check with an orthodontist and let him guide you.

See an orthodontist: You do not need to be referred to an orthodontist. If you feel like your smile could improve with orthodontics than just go and see an orthodontist and seek their opinion on the matter.

Why?: I'm curious why you have to 'convince' your dentist to let you have braces. If your dentist feels that you do not need them or more importantly that you should not have them, there must be some reason. If we had more information we could give you a better answer to your question. Two possible reasons not to have orthodontic treatment are periodontal (gum) problems & high caries index.

Reason?: What reason has your dentist given you not to have orthodontic treatment? Age is no barrier. Untreated gum disease, untreated decay, or some systemic diseases can contraindicated orthodontic treatment until controlled. It may be that your dentist does braces rx but feels your problem is beyond his comfort level. I would recommend that you see an orthodontic specialist for an opinion.
